XPDay.fr & Agile 2008

It's this time of the year again to propose session to different Agile conferences.

After proposing some networking game I also proposed to Peter for the last BarCamp, I now proposed the same game for XPday.fr. Only in Paris there will like +100 people. ( I think even 150) A lot more then even on BarCamp3

Next to that my father and I have proposed the same two games we proposed to XpDay.be

Then I have been proposing sessions to agile 2008

This time I have proposed also the leadership game. It still considered our best game by a lot of people.

And it is always fun to do it.

Only transport the props to Toronto will be expensive.

Still writing a few more proposals. At least one for Agile 2008. Helping Pascal for a customer proposal. & Then writing one for paircoaching.net

Don't forget to write your own proposal for Agile2008. One free submission to Agile 2008 for each accepted session.

(You know I advise to do presentations with two people)

A lot of fuzz on the internet about the new website of VRT.

Even an action in favour of good design. De Red-Actie.be (Not to confuse with the Red campagn)

I did not have time yet to "enjoy" the (real) Redactie site. I am not even a designer, so I will not add more noise to the discussion.

I am interested in the social, wikinomics aspect of the red-actie.
I have been coaching a partly Belgium-Partly Russian team for the last 2 years. Communication is crucial in working over the internet.

At previous BarCamp I wondered if anybody had used Twitter for project communication. I think that at least the project got started over Twitter.

So for the sake of a real wikinomics project in Belgium I hope Bart & co continue this action.

Guru BootCamp needs your help

I think that in this flat World of Wikinomics we need new kind of leadership styles.

New ways of communication in and between teams.

Personally I think that the rules of BootCamp are the start of this new way of communicating.

I realize that for the fast changing world this might not be enough.

That is why I want to organize a Guru BootCamp.
It will be something like an Open Space event where people who have been thinking and writing about Leadership will meet and work one week together.

Using the core protocols as a starting point, a guideline to come up with something even better.

If they don't like the Protocols (which I'll doubt), they will spend one week together with similar minds.

The people I have in mind will be very hard to get together. That's why I want to try it. And that is also why I need all the help I can get. If you know anyone who could help me in getting this organized please contact me at Yves at paircoaching . net

If you have suggestions for people that should be there too, please add them to the suggestion page.

I could have tried the Wisdow of Crowds approach to select the best date, but I'm afraid that will make it very hard to decide and it will take to much time. On the wiki the selected people can get connected and can decide on another date if they want.

This week is invitation only. So the participants have to be on this list. I have probably forgotten a lot of names. I will add more; And if you think of people I forgot please add them to this list.

No printers after re-installing my PC

The holiday season is the time to re-install my pc's.

I tried to install Vista, but it's complaining that it is not supported on this machine. I have a Pentium 4, 200 gB harddrive, 4 GB memory. It's complaining about something that XP wants as well (already forgot the details...)

Anyway, I did re-install Windows XP pro on my machine.

Everything fine. Except for my printers.

Let me Copy/Paste the error:

I downloaded the last printer drivers from HP for my 9130 printer.

My printer is online. And I can print from other machines.

Anybody any other idea's?

Preparing for 2008

When I read "Software for your head", I loved the protocols. I really thoughed they were a very powerfull way to optimize the communication in a team.

I was not sure how to use them in a team. I only dared to use them in a team after I did follow my Oklahoma bootcamp.

I was blow away about that experience. Last year I organized one in Belgium and was happy to see, it had the same effect on the participants.

This year I will focus myself on organizing BootCamps. so 2008 will be totally different from what I amused to.

I have never done this and not on that scale.

I will need help, lots of help. That is what I will focus on the next months.

I'm glad I started this journey

I'm sad I did not do it before

I'm afraid and glad, I do'nt know what the consequences are for my life

Let's go for 2008...

Being angry is alright...

I'm just back from a GTO (Gestalt Therapy Training) weekend.
I don't want to write too much detail on what happens there, as that is private to the group.

Although we don't learn techniques in the GTO, on thing that happened gave me an idea.

The way we deal with being angry is, is based on a script we wrote ourselves when we where kids and how we were allowed (or not) to deal with that.

The Check in protocol can help with that. Saying that you are mad, glad, sad or afraid. Checking out when being mad is as powerfull.

With my kids I learn them that being mad is OK.

It's not OK to hit me, themselves or someone else when being mad. Neither is doing anything stupid (like distroying something...)

So when my 3 year and 5 year old kids get mad and hit me, or spit at me or something similar I ask them to checkout or I put them in time-out.

Today I saw a very powerfull reaction of our trainer to a person being mad at her.

It's ok to be mad at me.
I don't promisse I will change my behaviour. But when I do this acion again, you are allowed to be mad, and every time this happens I will give you the time to deal with it.
In this case the person was given a pillow she could hit on. And believe me it helped.

It made me realize I allow my kids to be mad but I do'nt give them a tool to work out their frustration, their emotion and their energy.

It's not yet clear to me how we will do this. It is clear I want to do something with that idea.

I loved the fact that the trainer said, "it's ok to be mad at me. I will do the same thing. And it is OK to be mad at me for that." I noticed that this surprised a few people. I don't see many managers saying this. For me this is one of the qualities of a good leader. (Or parent).

It was also very clear that when you deal with this kind of situation badly as parent/manager, you can damage your kids/employees a lot.

The core protocols are a great way to deal with emotions at work.

Perfection game MBA in one day

What I liked about it:

Ben Tiggelaar

The total experience concept

The amount of useful information

The speed

The fun I had

The people I met. I saw my neighbor, an ex Youthclub-colleague, a Barcamper, some new people, a reporter

The pictures

What I need to give it a ten:

The dinner break had a lot of food but most breads contains the same. For someone allergic to cheese that gave a lot of problem.

Closer to my home without traffic problems

More organized networking in between the sessions and at the beginning

Find a better way to make people actually interact better during the questions part

What I liked about it:

Anne bringing the food to people who actually need it.

What I need to give it a ten:

Less but more different food (I'm allergic to cheese.)
Personally take the time to sleep better before the event
More buzz around it.
Me bringing my laptop. (Would have been easier to give an unprepared presentations)
On another date (1 December is the weekend before another important event for parents)
Me asking Peter for help on how I can help him.
All of us ignoring the people who subscribed but did not show up.
Me doing my "networking game" to make people better connect at the start of the event. (Instead of talking about it with Peter)

BarCamp Brussels 4

BarCamp Brussels 4 is over.
Like many people I have mixed feelings about the event.

I'm biased, I have sponsored the event (See picture).

Let's start with myself. I was too tired. I had a late night chat with Jim the night before.
I changed my presentation that same night and did not do a dry run. That was a mistake. It went wrong from the very first minute. I was speaking too quick.

Like all these other people already wrote, the atmosphere was different from last time.

We had less buzz, even Peter did not write so much about it. Maybe because everyone (except me) twittered more then blogged. I don't know much about twitter but to me it feels easier for outsiders to read blogs then to read twitterfeeds.

Never the less I'm still considering to use twitter on my next project for team communication. I got distracted again, back to BarCamp.

I like the open aspect.
I like self-organizing teams.
Who does not love Peter?
Just like last time I heard some interesting talks.
Also some fun talks (delivered by the Flemish CSI)

I had a few reason's not to be there on Saturday. Some might say, I even had a few good reason to be there.

I have been told lately that after a women has given birth you should not ask within the first months if she would like to have another child. I think that is the same for an even organizer. Peter did a great job for 4 times. I think it is normal and even good that it sometimes is a little less. Good as it is a reason to make it better and to think about it.

I already heard some good idea's. I would find it a shame if Peter gave up after this BarCamp as it still was good.

I agree it was not super great. I know a few people would love to help Peter with the organization. so my advise to Peter is Ask for Help. I like the idea of BarCamp Gent or BarCamp Antwerp, maybe we should just call it BarCamp Belgium (and it can move to any city we want)

I propose we forget about it for a 3 months. And then we meet in somewhere offline and think about BarCampB.

We could hold a real retrospective now. I will post a perfection game on BarCampB 4 later this week.

One more remark, I'm "collecting" picture of people with the PairCoaching marketing material. So please add pictures of the cups to your Flickr account and add it to our PairCoaching publicity group... If you want you could end up in our slides announcing the breaks in our courses (slide 23 ) ...

Next Wednesday Thou is playing in de Vooruit Ghent.

Unfortunatly I will not be able to join them. I saw them the 11 oktober in Oostend and it was great. I still think they are one of the best bands in Belgium.

I love the fact that they are selling their music now only digitally. (Or at their concerts). (They did it before Radiohead said they would do it...)

MBA in one day...

Tomorrow I am of to "MBA in one day"

The title is perfect marketing mambo jumbo. Perfect as it works.

I am going and it seems I will not be alone as it is in Kursaal Oostende.

I don't care about the "MBA", I care about refreshing my mind about a lot of books and learning a few others.

What convinced me, was that we get a bunch of CD's so I can listen in my car to these same books. Something I am doing more and more.

I could have bought just the cd's and don't miss one day at work. I hope the networking part will be just as interesting.

Actually after the succes of George Ataya's "Talking the senior management Language" on XP day Benelux I was already thinking about making some presentations to explain agility to MBA's and vice versa. This could be a good start.

Now I am in doubt, should I put the "MBA in one day" on my curriculum? What do you think?

Geike was in the hospital this week...

Our daughter Geike is born on 12/10/2007.

A few weeks ago we went to a workshop about babywearing

The workshop was in a small shop and it was a little bit crowdy .
At the end of the workshop Els saw Geike shivering in a strange way. It only lasted a few seconds (Maybe even less) enough to freak Els out and we left in a hurry.

Since that happened, we have already noticed the same thing 2 times more.
In all three occasions, it was hot, during a weekend after some intensive (stressy) moment.

Els wonders if on all occasions Geike was sleeping and that she was waken by some action of us.
Or that she moves from a warm place to a less warm place (close to Els her body to away from her body)

Els breastfeeds Geike, on top of that since one week we also started to give her 1 small bottle of milk in the evening(She usually drinks about 60ml)

Geike does not drink well, just as her two older brothers. She seems to have a lot of cramps, something her brothers did not have.

We though these shivers could be fits (Dutch: “stuipen”) something similar to epileptic attack.

Els went to the hospital this week. They asked her to stay immediately for 24 hours(she stayed 48 hours) , so they could put Geike to a monitor.

They did several tests on her:

Monitor
Taken Blood : she has to much P (phosphor?) in her blood (no idea what is too much)
Echo of the brains : nothing
taken some urine (no result yet)
EEG (not sure if this is correct)

The child doctor told Els all tests were fine (urinetest takes longer)

On the monitor Els saw from time to time “Apnea”. The nurse said this was nothing it had probably to do with the fact that the wires were not good attached. (Geike looked normal to me at the time of the alarm I saw.)

Tomorrow evening Els and Geike go back to the hospital for a test on "crib death" / “sleep apnea”

Myself I have some allergic reaction to milk.

I was breastfed for 6 weeks, and then 3 weeks later I got sick. They did not realize at that time I was allergic to cow milk
My sister was not breastfed and got ill almost immediate. (She had to start eating meat almost right away.) It took about 6 months before they found food she could digest.
My brother had the reaction when he was about six months old. One week earlier our doctor read an article from the states that made him realize what was the disease I and my sister had. He gave a “Questran” to my little brother for 8 days and everything disappeared.

Myself I have a bad stomach I really have to watch what I am eating (I think I have to be careful with Gluten)

When the doctor told Els he did not find anything he said that if we see the shivering again we should talk to a professor Neurology as it could be salaamcramps. We found a video on YouTube that is totally different from what we saw.
The Dutch Wikipedia says that Salaamcramps start at 5 to 6 months, Geike is 1 month old.

We wonder why our doctor thought about salaamcramps when he did not find anything. This piece of information got us worried a lot more.
Why would a doctor mention this when there is no reason?

When Geike was just born she sometimes reacted to the flash of my camera. I guess all kids do this but I know that epileptic attacks can be cased by flashing lights like stroboscopic lights. But that is just ghost from a parent with to many questions...

We have one idea for the phosphor we found out yesterday. (Did not tell the doctor yet)

The milk we gave to Geike contains 191 mg P in 100ml. The one in the hospital only contained 150mg in 100ml.That is 1/4 more. Could this be a reason?

Maybe Geike is having some form of Reflux and the shivering's are just nothing to worry about...

We don't know.

One of the sessions at XPDay that I heard a lot of good feed back from was about the Pomodoro Technique.

Francesco Cirillo wrote a paper on it.

Next month Bernard and me are doing another workshop on GTD.
We had a blast last time. And we were not the only ones.

After the good reactions from Laurent's workshop at XPDays I am even more convinced this workshop is the right thing at the right time...

Key principal: Get the right people on the bus

How?

Come to BootCamp with your team. Watch them in action. See who "gets it" and really boots, connects well with others, has great ideas, is accountable, acts more than plans, leads, listens, and gets results.

Why?

People pre BC are not the same as post BC. You might think you have the right people on the bus, and then find out in BC that all the previous indicators of who is right, were incorrect indicators.

When?

Now. There isn't a moment to be lost to get the right people on the bus and have them in a state of Shared Vision.

Where?

Anywhere you want. BC can happen in any facility you (CEO) chooses.

Possible objection: I don't want to pay to send the "wrong" people; therefore, I want to pick the right people first.

Answer: If you aren't absolutely sure who are the right people already, then there is no better indicator than BC. All the current people measurements, signals, indicators might mean that your current people are confounded by the current environment, leading to you (CEO) making incorrect choices. Bring them to BC, see them in the "real" world of BC, make your decisions then. The choices leading to headcount savings and/or efficiency savings will pay for BC. (This is exactly what Joe Sandy, VP Technology, Halliburton did)

XP Day Benelux is over

As always I had a very good time at XP days.

Oomp's are the best way to start a conference
I love to work with my father
I like to give a new session that challenges people
I love to talk with agilists that force me to rethink my current way of working
During the retrospective of XPDay's, we came up with a better idea for the Official Participants One minute retrospective that was used 10 minutes later. That is what agility is all about.
The networking aspect of XPDay's is great. And I had a great insight of how to make it even better. I have proposed to use it at XP France
With PairCoaching.net we had a few companies interested in Agility that we advised first to have a look at XPDay.be I was very happy to talk to all of them. Looks like XP/scrum/agility really is taking of.
I was happy to see Laurent giving a similar talk (GTD, leading an agile life) as what Bernard and me are giving with PairCoaching.net. I was sorry I missed the talk.
After having such a great BootCamp it was hard to not talk about BootCamp (I could not, neither did Ben,Bernard or Pascal) It looks like we have "infected" a lot of people. I am happy with it, the first subscription for the next BootCamp are already a fact...
Lasse took an enormous amount of great pictures . If you liked his talk, then don't forget to check out his book. He will give you a compete different insight in Test Driven development. It's for Java developers, but .Net developers will also learn alot of if you look beyond the code. (C# and Java look so similar anyway.) Don't believe me, just read the free sample Chapter.

I promised to add a link to the core protocols.
I agree when you read the document these protocols seems strange at least, maybe even hard to use. Just like most people I needed a BootCamp to get started. (Although I know some people that did not needed this.)

I have one question for my readers, I have put my books at different the tables in the room. Someone seems to have misplaced the book about Johan Cruyijf: "Je gaat het pas zien als je het doorhebt" Will you please help me to find my book back?
